The Best Lines from ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’

Posted on August 1, 2016 by

The wait for another Harry Potter book has finally ended with the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child this weekend. Cursed Child is the script of the recently premiered Harry Potter play, which continues Harry’s story 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts.

Rowling seemingly hasn’t skipped a beat, and the play’s best lines range from delightfully witty to beautifully heartfelt. Check out some of the best Cursed Child quotes below.

Harry to his son Albus

Although repeated from the final chapter of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this line still resonates.

Act 1, Scene 2

“Albus Severus, you were named after two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew.”

Ginny to Harry, Ron, and Hermione

Act 1, Scene 2

“People always look when you three are together. And apart. People always look at you.”

Scorpius Malfoy

Act 1, Scene 3

Albus Potter’s best friend is Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius.

“I mean — father-son issues, I have them. But, on the whole, I’d rather be a Malfoy than, you know, the son of the Dark Lord.”

Albus to Harry

There’s a bit of family turmoil in Cursed Child, which makes for great drama.

Act 1, Scene 4

“So what would you like me to do? Magic myself popular? Conjure myself into a new House? Transfigure myself into a better student? Just cast a spell, Dad, and change me into what you want me to be, okay? It’ll work better for both of us.”

Albus to the other students at Hogwarts

Act 1, Scene 4

“I didn’t choose, you know that? I didn’t choose to be his son.”

Cedric’s father, Amos Diggory, to Harry

Act 1, Scene 6

“How many people have died for the Boy Who Lived?”

Act 2, Scene 6

“All I ever wanted to do was go to Hogwarts and have a mate to get up to mayhem with. Just like Harry Potter. And I got his son. How crazily fortunate is that.”

Dumbledore to Harry

Act 2, Scene 8

“You ask me, of all people, how to protect a boy in terrible danger? We cannot protect the young from harm. Pain must and will come.”

Act 3, Scene 9

“The world changes and we change with it. I am better off in this world. But the world is not better. And I don’t want that.”

Act 4, Scene 1

“Hermione and Harry have done nothing wrong but try and protect us all. If they’re guilty then I am too.”

Act 4, Scene 4

“I am no fit person to love… I have never loved without causing harm.”

Act 4, Scene 4

“Harry, there is never a perfect answer in this messy, emotional world. Perfection is beyond the reach of humankind, beyond the reach of magic. In every shining moment of happiness is that drop of poison: the knowledge that pain will come again.”

Act 4, Scene 11

“Hermione Granger, I’m being bossed around by Hermione Granger… And I’m mildly enjoying it.”

Harry to Albus about his namesakes

Act 4, Scene

“They were great men, with huge flaws, and you know what — those flaws almost made them greater.”

Thank you, Ms. Rowling, for giving us such a great continuation of Harry’s story. It was everything we hoped for — and more!
