‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Adaptation to Feature Star-Studded Cast

Posted on September 16, 2016 by

Cast announcements were recently released for the highly anticipated adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle‘s 1962 novel, A Wrinkle in Time, revealing a star-studded team.

The book, which was optioned for film by Disney, follows three children — Meg Murray, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O’Keefe — as they adventure through time and visit strange worlds in search of Meg’s father. The adaptation will be directed by Ava DuVernay, has over a $100 million budget, and is expected for release in 2018.

Here’s who viewers can expect to see in four of the main roles, along with some tweets that show their excitement!

Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which

It was announced in July that Winfrey will play the part of Mrs. Which, one of three Mrs. Ws who help guide the children on their journey. Mrs. Which is described in the book as “someone in whom one could put complete trust.”

Earlier this week, Winfrey sent a playful tweet to costar Reese Witherspoon, quoting the first line of the novel:

Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit

Witherspoon landed the role of Mrs. Whatsit, who was once a star but sacrificed herself in the war against the Black Thing. According to the book, although she appears human, Meg realizes she “was beyond human understanding. What she saw was only the game Mrs. Whatsit was playing… it was only the tiniest facet of all the things Mrs. Whatsit could be.”

Witherspoon quickly jumped in on the Twitter action, tweeting at the actress cast to play the third Mrs. W:

Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who

Mindy completes the Mrs. W trio as Mrs. Who, who usually speaks in quotations from famous thinkers, like this one from the Book of John: “Mrs. Who’s spectacles shone out at them triumphantly, ‘And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.’

Mindy also joined in with her own A Wrinkle in Time tweet, giving a nod to the most recent cast addition:

Storm Reid as Meg Murray

And last but not least, Storm Reid will fill the lead role of Meg. The 13-year-old actress made her feature film debut in the award-winning movie 12 Years A Slave. DuVernay said of casting Reid, “Storm is a tremendously talented young actress who embodies the hopes, dreams, and spirit of a character much loved by audiences worldwide for generations.”

DuVernay also confirmed Reid would be joining the cast in a tweet of her own:

The way this cast is shaping up, we can’t wait to see who will fill the remaining roles!
