Fantasy readers, get excited! Yesterday, author Philip Pullman announced his plans for a follow-up trilogy to his beloved series, His Dark Materials. The companion books, called The Book of Dust, will feature heroine Lyra Belacqua and will trace her life from birth to adulthood. The trilogy is set to release on October 19.
“The [new] story begins before His Dark Materials and continues after it,” Pullman says. “[I]t’s not a sequel, and it’s not a prequel, it’s an equal.”
In The Book of Dust, Lyra will attempt to uncover the secrets of Dust, the mysterious substance from the original series that interacts with people. Pullman says he wanted to explore “more about the nature of Dust, and consciousness, and what it means to be a human being” in the new trilogy.
It has been 17 years since the final installment in His Dark Materials was released, so readers certainly have something to look forward to. In addition to the new series, fans are also waiting for BBC’s new TV adaptation of His Dark Materials.
