Just like its source material, the dystopian TV series is set in Gilead, a state ruled by a fundamentalist, totalitarian regime. Elisabeth Moss stars as Offred, a young woman struggling with her new life as a handmaid — a person whose sole responsibility is to reproduce. The cast also includes Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, and Alexis Bledel, and the show has gotten rave critical reviews so far.

So what will a second season of The Handmaid’s Tale involve? Many are speculating that clues can be found in the new audiobook version of Atwood’s classic, narrated by Claire Danes. Released early last month, the audiobook contains an extended epilogue featuring a Q&A session with Professor Pieixoto. In one instance, he tells the audience that there has been newly discovered evidence about Offred, saying, “Give us a year or two and I hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised.” In another instance, he tells them, “I hope to be able to present the results of our further Gileadian investigations to you at some future date.”

Could that future date be as soon as next year? With the author as a consulting producer on the TV series, fans can remain optimistic that a second season of The Handmaid’s Tale will involve Atwood and her vision on her characters’ fates as well.

The first four episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale are now available to stream on Hulu, and six more episodes are expected weekly. The show’s second season will premiere in 2018, according to Hulu.
