Orlando, Florida, may be home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but Potterheads north of the US border are getting their own taste of J.K. Rowling’s magical world this week. Diagon Alley comes to vivid, magical life in Toronto’s new Harry Potter–inspired store, Curiosa.
Calling themselves “Purveyors of Extraordinary Things,” Curiosa, which opened its doors this week, is operated by a husband-wife duo, Stephen and Heather Sauer. The Sauers consider themselves huge Harry Potter fans, so casting a spell on Toronto and creating the world of Hogwarts in retail form was a no-brainer.
Stephen told blogTO, “We wanted to create a space that was really fun and magical, and you really had to be there in person.” He added, “We really just wanted to bring a bit of magic into people’s lives.”
As such, Curiosa is chock-full of items sure to satisfy even the most passionate of Potterheads. If it’s back-to-school shopping you’re looking for, the store offers up magical fare like quill pens, leather-bound books, and even Marauder’s Map prints from MinaLima, the company that created the stunning graphic design in the Potter films.
For gifts, Curiosa offers a bevy of thoughtful items. Potterheads can purchase bangles worthy of Professor Trelawney — Curiosa sells bracelets handmade by an Etsy vendor and inscribed with the classic Deathly Hallows quote, “After all this time? Always.” Looking for a birthday treat? Try the simple but hilarious “This card is haunted” card.
So far, fans are loving the store. On Curiosa’s Facebook page, visitors have left glowing reviews:
“The BEST store in Toronto hands down! This store carries such interesting, unique items… If there was an option, I would give this store 10 stars.”
“So much fun visiting this store!! the decor is AWESOME — love the potions being mixed in the cauldrons 🙂 So many interesting areas to look at, I could easily spend a lot of time here.”
Aside from Curiosa, Canada has seen an influx of Potter–themed establishments in recent years. The Lockhart, a bar inspired by Rowling’s magical world, opened in Toronto back in 2015, with a second location opening in Montreal earlier this year.
