It’s that time of year when the air turns crisp, and we look forward to sitting in front of a fire, turning on the TV, and snuggling up on the sofa with Aidan Turner… Well, maybe we can’t cuddle up with the Poldark actor himself, but we can tune in to Poldark season 3, which premieres on October 1 on PBS.
Season 2 ended with the cliffhanger: the possibility that Elizabeth’s baby may not be fathered by her devilish husband, George Warleggan. Will the truth be revealed in season 3? According to producer Debbie Horsfield, this upcoming season promises “a story which scales new heights of conflict, feuding, passion, and drama.” Here’s everything you need to know about Poldark season 3.
1. Season 3 will continue to follow Winston Graham’s series.
In particular, this season will touch on the events of two books: The Black Moon, book five in Graham’s series, as well as the first part of book six, The Four Swans. “We’re doing one and a half books this time, because the books are much fatter, and we didn’t want to skimp on the storytelling,” said Horsfield.
2. Many of our favorite characters will return.
Aidan Turner will be back as Poldark, of course, and Eleanor Tomlinson reprises her role as his long-suffering wife, Demelza. Luke Norris returns as the dashing Dr. Dwight Enys; Ruby Bentall as Verity, Gabriella Wilde as the adorable, headstrong Caroline Penvenen; Caroline Blakiston as crusty aunt Agatha; and Beatie Edney as servant Prudie Paynter. Sadly, though, not all of these characters will survive the third season.
3. Ross Poldark will have some competition as new cast members arrive.
Demelza’s two handsome brothers, Drake (played by Harry Richardson), and deeply religious Sam (played by Tom York), reunite with their sister, bringing drama and love affairs of their own. In fact, newcomer Ellise Chappell plays Elizabeth’s cousin, Morwennna, who becomes governess to little George Warleggan and falls for one of Demelza’s brothers. Will their love survive the barrier of social class?
Additionally, Josh Whitehouse is onboard as aristocrat Lieutenant Hugh Armitage who is equal parts handsome and romantic… and appreciative of Demelza’s beauty and spirit. Will Demelza fall for the lieutenant’s charms?
4. Already out in the UK, Poldark season 3 is receiving solid reviews.
The Guardian says that season 3, episode one, had “enough going on in this episode to fuel an entire series of any other drama,” and does a nice job of recapping audiences on where season 2 left off. DigitalSpy calls the ensemble cast “excellent,” and The Independent says episode one is both “absorbing” and “atmospheric.”
5. Filming for season 4 is underway.
We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but Poldark season 4 has officially been confirmed! We’re relieved to know Turner will definitely be galloping along the Cornish cliffs as Poldark for at least one more season. Although no release dates have been set, fans can likely expect season 4 in 2018.
