Very exciting Outlander news, Sassenachs! Two new cast members have been announced to play key roles in season 4 of our favorite time-traveling Starz drama. Ed Speleers (Wolf Hall, Downton Abbey) and Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors, Orphan Black) have signed on to join the Outlander season 4 cast. Speleers will play the dastardly Irish pirate and smuggler Stephen Bonnet, and Kennedy will play Jamie’s stubborn and strong-willed Aunt Jocasta.
While we’re still in the middle of season 3, production on the 13-episode fourth season of Outlander kicked off this week in Scotland. Season 4 will be based on Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in the series by internationally bestselling author Diana Gabaldon.
Fans of Gabaldon’s novels will recall that Jocasta Cameron was the youngest sister of Jamie’s mother, Ellen, and his uncles, Dougal and Colum Mackenzie. In Drums of Autumn, Jamie and Claire travel to Jocasta’s plantation called River Run in the American colonies, hoping to find a new beginning. In their travels, the star-crossed lovers also have several encounters with the pirate Stephen Bonnet. He becomes an integral character to the series, especially in relation to Claire and Jamie’s daughter Brianna Randall (played by Sophie Skelton in the series) and Brianna’s partner, Roger Wakefield (played by Richard Rankin).
While we have a lot to look forward to with season 4, season 3 of Outlander is off to a terrific start! Fans are anxiously waiting for the sixth episode that will finally bring Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) back together after 20 years apart. This brief one-week Droughtlander ends on October 22 with the highly anticipated reunion between the two in Edinburgh. Even better: The episode has been extended to 74 minutes in length, so we can really enjoy the passionate reunion!
