Potterheads have a lot to be excited about! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has joined forces with Pokémon GO creators Niantic Labs to bring J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world to life. The new augmented reality game, dubbed Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, will allow players to explore the world of Harry Potter in a truly immersive experience from their smartphones.
While few details about the game have been released, the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite website features this enticing description:
“Harry Potter: Wizards Unite uses state-of-the-art augmented reality technology to reveal the magic all around us. Explore real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover mysterious artifacts, learn to cast spells, and encounter legendary beasts and iconic characters along the way!”
According to the Niantic website, in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, “Players will learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover and fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”
Fans of last year’s popular Niantic mobile game Pokémon GO will already be familiar with augmented reality. Using GPS maps and smartphone cameras, Niantic creates real-world experiences in its games, allowing players to see creatures on-screen as if they existed in real life. The novelty of augmented reality technology helped Pokémon GO become one of the most downloaded apps in 2016 and, as of June 2017, the game had been downloaded more than 750 million times with a revenue of $1.2 billion.
Under the name Portkey Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is committed to bringing Potterheads even more mobile and console games. The division’s title is a nod to Rowling’s fictional portkey, an enchanted object that is used to transport someone to a specific destination when touched.
The official launch for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is expected sometime in 2018, but no release date has been set.
