In a Facebook post on Friday evening, Moriarty said:
“I’m excited to announce my excuse for running a little late with my next novel! HBO asked me to write a story for season 2 of Big Little Lies. I had a lot of fun writing a novella and David E. Kelley is once again writing the screenplay. “
The dark comedy’s TV adaptation was a smash hit with fans and took home several Emmy awards in September. Rumors of a second season have been circulating since the show wrapped in April.
Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are signed on to reprise their roles as Celeste and Madeline and will also return as executive producers. HBO says negotiations are under way and they anticipate “most of the cast” to be back.
Kidman said in a statement:
“This is inspired by the overwhelming response by audiences around the world… What a journey this has been. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity to keep exploring these female characters and make this series with my friends.”
Vulture reports that auditions are under way to cast four new roles in the show, including Michael Perkins, a new second-grade teacher at Otter Bay Elementary, a new employee in the school’s administration office, and Bonnie’s (Zoë Kravitz) parents, Elizabeth and Martin Howard.
There will also be a change in directors for the new season. Andrea Arnold (Transparent) will direct all seven episodes of the second season, replacing Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club), who will remain an executive producer of the show. Witherspoon voiced her excitement for working with Arnold in a statement:
“I’m thrilled to be bringing back this talented team of artists… I’m beyond excited to be working with talented and acclaimed director Andrea Arnold who will be at the helm. Andrea’s unique storytelling style will be a welcome addition to the filmmaking team.”
According to Vulture, production for the new season will take place between March and August 2018. HBO has not yet announced when the show will air.
