Exciting news! The first trailer for the new PBS adaptation of Little Women has been released — and it’s lovely! Featuring the characters we know and love from Louisa May Alcott’s beloved classic, take a look at the first Little Women trailer below:
Set against the harrowing backdrop of the Civil War, Little Women is a family drama that follows the four March sisters as they leave the innocence of childhood behind and discover all the trials and tribulations of becoming young women.
Legendary actress Angela Lansbury, who plays the cantankerous Aunt March, puts it succinctly in the trailer: “Four small children is a recipe for heartache, headache, and indigestion.” Fans of the novel know she’s not wrong — the March girls are a handful for their enduringly patient mother to manage alone while their father is away at war. Marmee, played by Emily Watson, tells her daughters in the trailer that she would like to keep them with her as long as she can, but what she really wants is “real love, for all of you, from good men.”
Over the course of Little Women, the girls each forge their own unique path in the world and experience their first loves and heartbreak, along with the joys of marriage and children and the sorrow of family tragedy. In the PBS adaptation, the March sisters are played by Willa Fitzgerald (Meg), Maya Hawke (Jo), Annes Elwy (Beth), and Kathryn Newton (Amy). Rounding out the cast are Jonah Hauer-King as Laurie, the handsome love interest for both Jo and Amy, and Michael Gambon as the March family’s elderly neighbor, Mr. Laurence.
Little Women is being produced by Playground (Wolf Hall) for BBC One. The series is a co-production with Masterpiece on PBS. Vanessa Caswill (Thirteen) directs and Heidi Thomas (Call the Midwife) wrote the TV adaptation.
In addition to the TV series, Little Women is also being adapted for film, set to premiere in 2018. The film version is directed by Clare Niederpruem and stars Lea Thompson as Marmee.
The miniseries adaptation of Little Women premieres on PBS next Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018.
