Set on Guernsey Island during World War II, the story focuses on a young author who forges incredible ties with a unique society while writing about a book club they formed during the German occupation. The movie, which is being distributed and financed by French company StudioCanal, began filming in March 2017 around Saunton Sands in North Devon, UK, while some exterior shots were filmed at the London Charterhouse, where Downton Abbey also filmed.

This isn’t the only connection that the Guernsey movie has with the much-loved Downton Abbey. In fact, the cast for the film is made up of several Downton Abbey alums. Lily James will play Juliet Ashton in Guernsey; Matthew Goode stars as Sidney Stark; Jessica Brown Findlay plays Elizabeth McKenna; and Penelope Wilton is cast as Amelia Maugery.

Additional cast members include Michiel Huisman as Dawsey Adams, Katherine Parkinson as Isola Pribby, and Glen Powell as Mark Reynolds, amongst others.

The role of Juliet Ashton, the intrepid writer at the heart of this story, was highly-coveted when the adaptation was first announced back in 2010, and before James landed the part, there were several major actress attached to the role, including Kate Winslet.

The first trailer was released in February, and it looks great! Check it out here:

The film was initially set to be directed by Kenneth Branagh, but in 2013, it was revealed that neither Winslet nor Branagh were still attached to the project. Instead, Variety reports that the Guernsey movie will now be directed by British filmmaker Mike Newell, who previously won a BAFTA Award for his 1994 classic Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The film is expected to hit theaters in the UK on April 20, 2018 — stay tuned for an updated US release date!
