Long before its film release, E L James‘s Fifty Shades of Grey was an international phenomenon, selling millions of copies worldwide. And now, the Fifty Shades movie adaptation franchise is raking in millions of dollars at the box office. This week, Fifty Shades Freed, the third installment in the steamy series, hits theaters just in time for Valentine’s Day. The new film, which promises to be even sexier than its predecessors (if that’s possible!), takes a dark and suspenseful turn as Christian and Anastasia Grey find themselves in danger shortly after celebrating their wedding. Here’s everything you need to know about the Fifty Shades Freed movie, out February 9.
1. This will be the last installment in the Fifty Shades series.
Dakota Johnson, who plays Anastasia in the films, told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that the third installment is indeed the final film in the franchise, despite the fact that there are additional books in the series told from Christian’s perspective. Fifty Shades Freed will follow Christian and Ana as newlyweds whose idyllic new life is disrupted by Ana’s disgruntled vengeful former boss. Not to mention, Christian will discover new revelations about his past, and the couple will receive some unexpected pregnancy news that upturns their new life together.
2. Fifty Shades Freed was filmed consecutively with Fifty Shades Darker in Vancouver and Nice.
Fifty Shades Freed was filmed at the same time as last year’s Fifty Shades Darker in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Nice, France. Some of the scenes were shot on the beach of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in Nice as part of Christian and Ana’s over-the-top, luxurious honeymoon. Readers will remember that Ana and Christian tour Europe for their getaway — Ana’s first time across the pond.
3. Jamie Dornan revealed exactly how the sex scenes were filmed.
When filming the sex scenes with Johnson, Dornan revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that things weren’t as sexy as the final cut makes them out to be. Not only did the actor have to wear a bag to cover his genitals, but it had also already been used in another film:
“On the first movie, I thought there’d be — and there was — a selection of [bags] for me, and I picked one. And I thought I’d take them out of the packets, they’d be brand new. They’ll have that brand new smell. And then I sort of picked one that I liked the look of and the shape of, and then I picked it up and in the seam, it said, ‘inmate number three.’ It was sewed in.”
4. Dornan actually sings a cover on the soundtrack.
Fans will be pleasantly surprised by Dornan’s musical talents on full display in this new soundtrack with his rendition of Paul McCartney’s “Make Me Amazed.” According to director James Foley, “[Dornan is] an incredibly good singer — he sang a lot on set.” In addition to Dornan’s cover, there are several delicious new songs added to the soundtrack from Hailee Steinfeld, Rita Ora, Liam Payne, Sia, and many more.
5. Several new cast members are joining Johnson and Dornan on screen.
Rita Ora and Luke Grimes will reprise their roles as Christian’s sister and brother, respectively, and Kim Basinger is back as Christian’s former lover, Elena Lincoln. Viewers will also welcome the addition of Arielle Kebbel as Gia Matteo, the seductive architect that Christian hires for their new house and who causes a bit of tension for the Greys. Additionally, Brant Daugherty plays Sawyer, Ana’s new bodyguard that Christian hires to protect her from their stalker, Jack Hyde. Finally, Ana’s stepfather, Bob Adams, is played by Dylan Neal, and Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) also joins the cast as Boyce Fox, an author who signs with Ana’s publishing company, Seattle Independent Press.
6. Movie reviews are out — here’s what the critics say.
As usual with this franchise, Fifty Shades Freed is garnering a mixed bag of reviews. For instance, IndieWire says, “Finally, the Fifty Shades phenomenon has yielded a disarming comedy that makes this ridiculous material fun to watch,” while The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Freed rarely delivers the goods while trying hard to give fans what they came for.” Click here for a full round-up of reviews.
